Everything from the food we eat to the personal care products we use, to the cleaning products we use have an effect on our health.
Pregnant women especially need to be careful of the products they use because about 60% of what we put on our skin gets absorbed and can pass through to the baby.
The Baby Laundry Detergent from Attitude Living is a formula that the company promises is made of only the safest and purest ingredients, which will not only benefit everyone in your household but your delicate baby the most.
Considering the fact that it’s made for babies, we really hope it stands up to its claims and makes us happy to recommend it to you!
The Attitude Living Company
Attitude is a Canadian bath, body and household product company based on the idea that we can take the simple, often mundane aspects of life and see the beauty in them. For parents washing dirty baby clothes, doing the laundry may not seem like moments to cherish, but we can pretend nonetheless.
Attitude is also an EWG (Environmental Working Group) verified product company, basing their ingredients on the EWG’s assessments for safety. Attitude is also proud to say that none of their products contain cancer-causing chemicals or endocrine disrupters, are vegan, are made with recycled packaging, are made from vegetable and mineral sources, are made using renewable energy and pass all Canadian quality and safety standards.
Wow, this is an impressive track record.
I couldn’t wait for the product to arrive.
So the company impresses – what’s the product Like?
The Baby Laundry Detergent from Attitude is a fragrance-free liquid detergent and is claimed to be safe and effective for washing baby clothes. The detergent is meant to leave clothes naturally clean and soft, and is “perfectly suited for washing cloth diapers” according to Attitude.
What makes this detergent so great, according to Attitude?
- Free of carcinogen ingredients
- Free of 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide (both highly hazardous carcinogens)
- Free of EDTA and NTA
- Not tested on animals, and
- Septic tank safe
- Use in cold water in both High-Efficiency and standard machines
Plus the company, unlike most manufacturers, actually disclose the ingredients – allowing me to examine these claims in more detail later.
We’ll examine these claims in more detail later.
It sounds great. How does it clean?
The washing directions are – Use 2/3 of a capful for mild-moderate stains and one full cap for heavily soiled clothes. For tough stains, they advise to pour a small amount of the detergent directly onto the stain and to rub or allow it to soak before washing.
The product itself came in a recycled plastic jug with a cap top that’s to be used for measuring and pouring the detergent.
The detergent soap is a clear liquid, free from any dyes. It is also fragrance-free, which makes it suitable for sensitive skin that can often react to fragrances in products.
We tested the detergent on a shirt and pants with coffee and wine stains. We used one full cap in our High-Efficiency washer on cold.
As you can see by the photo below, the detergent successfully took out the stains and left no prisoners behind! We’re happy with the results. The clothes also felt soft to the touch – I personally wouldn’t need to pair this with a fabric softener.
Top marks for cleaning!
So it washes well – are the ingredients as good as they say?
There’s only 5 ingredients in this formulation. Compared to other detergents this is minimal. An approach I love. Less is more when it comes to cleaning product formulation. No unnecessary additives.
The ingredients are:
- Sodium Coco Sulfate — a very gentle coconut derived anionic surfactant
- Lauryl Glucoside— a gentle sugar and lipid-based non-ionic surfactant
- Sodium Citrate— a form of citric acid (lemon juice). A pH adjusting and buffering agent used to ensure the ingredients all work nicely together and to adjust the acidity.
- Sodium Gluconate—derived from sugar, this is a chelating and conditioning lathering agent
None of these ingredients have any research findings that show any concern over being a potentially harmful or irritating ingredient, an environmentally toxic ingredient, or at all unsafe for use in cosmetic and food products.
We can’t find anything wrong or potentially unsafe about these ingredients and I’m especially heartened to see the company haven’t added preservatives or fragrances – which so often cause the most trouble with allergies or asthma.
So do we recommend it?
The fragrance-free Baby Laundry Detergent from Attitude is a great option for new parents and their babies, moms and dads-to-be, and those who simply want a non-toxic option for their family and anyone with sensitive skin.
The few ingredients used in the formula are derived from natural sources, biodegradable, and appear safe and non-toxic. Attitude has taken a great deal of care and effort to come up with this formulation. The fact it washes so well is incredible considering how few ingredients are in there.
We definitely recommend giving it a try. Even if you don’t have babies!
